To assure prompt engineering, pricing, and delivery service on special drills, please submit a “Request For Special Drill Quote” form along with drawings of the parts to be machined together with any additional pertinent information regarding work materials, hole tolerances, and anticipated production requirements. From this data, Ace engineers will be able to develop and recommend the type or types of drills best suited to your particular needs.

Surface Treatment

Ace Drill provides black oxide surface treatment at no charge upon request.  The advantages of this type of surface treatment are as follows:

· Prevents corrosion

· Increases abrasion resistance

· Minimizes light reflection

· Aids in rapid chip removal

· Creates an attractive finish 

Coatings

Ace Drill offers four different coating options available on any drill we manufacture for your convenience: Titanium Nitride (TiN), Titanium Carbo-Nitride (TiCN), Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN), and Aluminum Chromium Nitride (AlCrN).  Pricing is available upon request.

Titanium Nitride Coating (TiN)

Titanium Nitride coating provides protection against abrasive and adhesive wear, and dually functions as a wear indicator. TiN coating is also popular due to its decorative effect which results from its attractive gold color. Titanium Nitride coating has a microhardness of 2,300, a friction coefficient (dry) against steel of .4, and a maximum service temperature of 1112° Fahrenheit.

Titanium Carbo-Nitride (TiCN)

Titanium Carbo-Nitride coating is known for being extremely hard, tough, and wear-resistant, while providing a low friction coefficient.  TiCN is blue-grey in color, has a friction coefficient (dry) against steel of .4, a microhardness of 3,000, and a maximum service temperature of 752° Fahrenheit.

Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN)

Titanium Aluminum Nitride is the perfect combination of hardness and residual compressive stress, and is sought after for its ability to increase the stability of cutting edges. It is great at protecting against erosion and abrasive wear, improves performance of highly stressed components, and is very thermal and chemical resistant. TiAlN is violet-grey in color, has a microhardness of 3,300, a friction coefficient (dry) against steel of .3 to .35, and a maximum service temperature of 1652° Fahrenheit.

 

Aluminum Chromium Nitride (AlCrN)

Aluminum Chromium Nitride has excellent thermal shock stability, wear resistance, and hot hardness, and is one of the best all-around coatings available. AlCrN is grey in color, has a microhardness of 3,200, a friction coefficient (dry) against steel of .35, and a maximum service temperature of 2012° Fahrenheit.

Heat Treating

Ace Drill heat treats the steel used in our drills on-site. Our steel is heat treated in the round in a continuously fed heat treating furnace and then tempered. We offer only premium grade steel sourced from steel mills in the USA.

Because of our continuous process, we are able to offer lower priced drills, while maintaining a high Rockwell product (typically 63-65 for M2/M7 and 65-68 for M42).

Our process:

· Preheat Temperature 1450° F

· Heat Treat Temperature 2185° F

· Quench Type: Air

· Tempering 1040° F for 2 hours, cool, repeat once for M2/M7 or repeat twice for M42
